GENERAL INFORMATION

• TIME DIFFERENCES
Time in Mozambique is given by a single time zone, officially denoted as Central Africa Time (CAT; UTC+02:00). Mozambique is seven hours ahead of EST.

• GETTING THERE
Maputo International Airport, also known as Mavalane International Airport, is located 3 kilometres northwest of the centre of Maputo. It is the largest airport in Mozambique. South African Airways, Airlink, CEM Air and SAFAIR all have flight routes to Maputo. Direct flights to Maputo depart from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Flights to Maputo from Namibia or Botswana are available via Johannesburg or Cape Town. The Airport to the Radisson Blu Hotel is 7kms (20 minutes by car). There are daily LAM flights, Maputo-Johannesburg (Mozambique airlines). Land transport is also available.

• PASSPORTS AND VISAS
When travelling to Mozambique you need a passport which is valid for at least six months. All visitors to Mozambique need to obtain a visa to enter the country except visitors from Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

• CLOTHING & CLIMATE
The average temperature for Mozambique is 28ºC all year round. The climate varies slightly according to the regions of the country. During September and October it remains dry as daytime temperatures climb, though it cools down at night. Lightweight (cottons and linens) clothes are best, although a light jersey/jumper might be needed for the cooler evenings.

• BANKS AND MONEY
Mozambique's currency is called Metical (plural: Meticais) and banknotes are in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Meticais. 1 Metical is the equivalent of 100 Centavos. Coins are provided in denominations of 50 centavos, 1, 2, 5 and 10 meticais. Major credit cards including MasterCard and foreign Visa cards are accepted by most upmarket hotels, lodges, restaurants, retail outlets & vehicle rental services. Visa cards can be used to draw money out of ATMs found in Mozambique's larger towns & cities however you may struggle to draw money using MasterCard at Millennium BIM and Standard Bank machines.

• ELECTRICITY
There are three associated plug types, types C, F and M. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins, plug type F is the plug which has two round pins with two earth clips on the side and plug type M has three round pins. Mozambique operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz. It is recommended to bring a travel adapter.

• TIPPING
A 10% tip for service in most Mozambique restaurants is standard and appreciated. It is customary to tip your lodge or hotel staff and travel guides.

• DISABLED TRAVELLERS

• HOSPITALS AND MEDICAL CARE 
The standards for patient care and medical services in Mozambique may differ from your home country. Mozambique has a public healthcare system and a large private sector. Access to healthcare services varies by region. There are three major hospitals – in Maputo, Beira, and Nampula – that can treat serious medical issues. Smaller regional hospitals and medical centres are available throughout the country and provide basic care. Pharmacies and medications - While pharmacies may be widely available in Mozambique, we would recommend that you pack a sufficient supply of essential medication for the duration of your trip.

• MALARIA
Malaria risk is high throughout the year in all areas of Mozambique. The CDC recommends that travelers going to Mozambique take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you may need to start this multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. The use of a good insect repellent and barriers such as mosquito nets are recommended.

• WATER
In the built up areas of Mozambique, like Maputo, Inhambane and Beira, it is safe to drink the tap water. If you are unsure, bottled water is available.

• VACCINATIONS
There is no yellow fever risk in Mozambique. In order to maintain this status, the country requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate from those travelling from the following countries (travel includes transit stays that surpass 12 hours): Angola, Argentina, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, French Guyana, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, Suriname, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, and Venezuela.  At the time of planning your travel to Mozambique please consult with your travel agent regarding any changes in vaccinations.

• LANGUAGE
Portuguese is the official language. English is generally spoken in hotels and beach lodges

The Conference Organisers have taken all reasonable care in making arrangements for the Conference, including accommodation. In the event of unforeseen disruptions, neither the Conference Organisers nor the Society can be held responsible for any losses incurred by delegates. The Conference organisers act as agents only in securing hotels, transport and travel services, and shall in no event be liable for acts or omissions in the event of injury, damage, loss, accident delay or irregularity of any kind whatsoever during arrangements organised through contractors or by the employees of such contractors. Hotel and transportation services are subject to the terms and conditions under which they are offered to the general public. Delegates should make their own arrangements with respect to personal insurance. The Conference organisers reserve the right to make changes as and when deemed necessary, without prior notice to the parties concerned.
